Milk: More or Less

Recall from Canada Food Inspection Agency
Rahman Mohamed

Canada Food Inspection Agency issued a notice on October 8 that Agropur Coopérative put out a recall for Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Ontario for milk distributed by PC Organics, Natrel, and Irresistibles Bio due to spoilage.  The milk expired between October 18 and October 31.  It’s probably in stomachs now or down the drains so it’s too late to worry.  Canadians (and people around the world) probably still have milk in their fridge.  But are there benefits to milk?

According to recent research published on WebMD milk is good for you, but in moderation.  The calcium in milk can help strengthen bones.  But  women who drank more than three glasses or more a day were found to have nearly doubled risk of death and cardiovascular disease “and a 44 percent increased risk of cancer”.  Men’s risk of death increased to 10% with three or more glasses.

U.S. Dietary guidelines recommends three servings of milk a day.  Drinking milk reduces the risk of Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and the risk of heart disease.

But Mary Schooling, a professor at the City University of New York School of Public Health says people shouldn’t change their diets because of the study.
